Moses G. Smith grew up in North Dakota. He was a Fort Berthold tribal member. Moses was a man of many interests who played football in high school. During his life he worked as a barber, a policeman, and did road construction.

Some of his most rewarding work was as an Indian Youth Advocate for ISD 709. Moses also performed on the Pow Wow Circuit. He passed away in 2000 and is very fondly remembered by his family and friends.


Julie M. Smith was born in Two Harbors, Minnesota. She was a Grand Portage tribal member. Julie was talented in beadwork. She studied at the College of St. Scholastica and became an RN. In their early days, Julie served as Moses’ tutor. She passed away in 2018.

The Moses G. and Julie M. Smith Foundation represents the generosity of these two very fine people.
